Pond volume: Select a filter rated for at least the actual pond volume. Avoid choosing a system that is only just sufficient, especially when the pond contains many fish.
Fish load: Koi and heavily stocked ornamental ponds produce substantially more waste than lightly stocked decorative ponds, so additional filtration capacity is usually beneficial.
Sunlight exposure: Ponds exposed to strong sunlight can experience more suspended algae and green water. A pond filter with an appropriately sized integrated UV clarifier can help control free-floating algae.
Mechanical filtration: Foam and other mechanical filter media trap suspended debris before the water returns to the pond.
Biological filtration: Biological media provides surface area for beneficial bacteria that help process ammonia and nitrite produced by fish and organic waste.
UV filtration: UV clarifiers expose circulating water to ultraviolet light and are useful for reducing suspended green-water algae. UV does not replace mechanical or biological filtration.
Pump compatibility: Match the pond pump flow rate to the filter’s recommended operating range. Excessive flow can reduce filtration effectiveness or exceed the filter’s rated capacity.
Plan for real pond conditions: Manufacturer pond-volume ratings can vary according to sunlight and stocking level. For heavily stocked koi ponds or ponds in full sun, selecting a larger filter than the nominal pond volume is usually the safer choice.
