Seachem KanaPlex 5g – Aquarium Fish Bacterial Treatment

Seachem KanaPlex 5g is a kanamycin-based aquarium fish medication formulated for the treatment of several bacterial and fungal fish diseases. It can be used in both freshwater and marine aquariums and is particularly useful when treating infections where affected fish have stopped eating.

KanaPlex is absorbed through the fish’s skin and gills, allowing medication to reach the fish even when oral feeding is difficult. It is commonly selected for conditions including fin rot, dropsy, popeye, cloudy eye, mouth rot and bacterial septicemia.

What Can Seachem KanaPlex Be Used For?

KanaPlex may be used when symptoms or diagnosis indicate bacterial or susceptible fungal disease. Common conditions associated with KanaPlex treatment include:

Fin Rot

Fin rot often appears as damaged, frayed or progressively deteriorating fins. Bacterial infection can occur directly or as a secondary infection after stress, injury or another illness.

Dropsy

Dropsy is usually recognised by swelling or bloating and scales that may project outward, giving the fish a pinecone-like appearance. It can indicate serious internal damage, so early identification and treatment are important.

Popeye

Popeye causes one or both eyes to protrude because of fluid accumulation behind the eye. Bacterial infections are one possible cause.

Cloudy Eye

A cloudy or filmed appearance over the eye can sometimes be associated with bacterial infection, particularly where aquarium conditions or fish stress have contributed to the problem.

Mouth Rot / Columnaris

Mouth and tissue deterioration, ulcers, damaged fins or pale/yellowish areas around the head or gills may be signs of bacterial infection such as columnaris. Affected fish should ideally be isolated when possible because some bacterial diseases can spread rapidly.

Septicemia

Red streaking, haemorrhaging beneath the scales or fins and other systemic symptoms can be associated with bacterial septicemia. Maintaining good aquarium water quality should form part of treatment and recovery.

Important: Fish diseases can share very similar symptoms. Identify the likely cause as accurately as possible before choosing medication and follow the manufacturer’s directions.

Why KanaPlex Is Useful When Fish Stop Eating

One of the important advantages of Seachem KanaPlex is that it does not have to be swallowed when dosed into the aquarium water.

Because the medication can be absorbed through the skin and gills, KanaPlex may still be useful for bacterial infections when an affected fish has lost its appetite.

For fish that continue to eat, KanaPlex can alternatively be combined with food for more targeted medication delivery.

How to Dose Seachem KanaPlex in Aquarium Water

Before treatment:

• Remove invertebrates from the treatment aquarium
• Switch off UV sterilisation and ozone equipment
• Remove activated carbon and other chemical filtration such as Purigen during the medication period

Use 1 included measure for every 20 litres of aquarium water.

Repeat the dose every 48 hours, for a maximum of 3 doses per treatment course.

For severe infections, another treatment course may sometimes be performed according to Seachem’s directions, provided the fish are showing no signs of treatment-related stress.

For best control and observation, treating sick fish in a separate hospital or quarantine aquarium is often preferable.

Using KanaPlex With Food

When fish are eating, KanaPlex can also be administered in a medicated food mixture.

Seachem’s recommended food-mix method uses:

• 1 scoop KanaPlex
• 1 scoop Seachem Focus
• 1 tablespoon of fish food, preferably pellets or frozen food
• A few drops of water when using dry food

Feed the medicated food daily until the infection clears or for up to approximately one week according to Seachem’s directions.

Seachem Focus acts as a binder and helps keep medication attached to food instead of allowing it to disperse rapidly into the aquarium water.

KanaPlex vs MetroPlex – Which One Should You Choose?

KanaPlex and MetroPlex are different medications and should be selected according to the suspected infection.

Seachem KanaPlex is primarily chosen for susceptible bacterial infections and certain fungal disease indications, including conditions such as fin rot, popeye, dropsy and mouth rot.

Seachem MetroPlex is primarily intended for certain protozoan parasites and anaerobic bacterial infections.

Choosing medication based only on a visible symptom can lead to ineffective treatment because several aquarium diseases can look similar.

During Treatment

Remove chemical filtration media capable of adsorbing medication during water treatment.

This includes products such as:

• Seachem Purigen
• Seachem MatrixCarbon
• Other activated carbon or chemical adsorbents

These media may remove medication from the aquarium and reduce the intended treatment concentration.

Maintain good oxygenation and monitor fish closely throughout treatment.

After KanaPlex Treatment

Once treatment is complete, activated carbon such as Seachem MatrixCarbon may be returned to the filter to help remove residual medication from the aquarium water.

Normal filtration can then be resumed according to the manufacturer’s treatment instructions.

Freshwater and Marine Aquarium Use

Seachem KanaPlex is intended for freshwater and marine ornamental fish aquariums.

However, caution is recommended around invertebrates, and medication should not automatically be assumed to be reef-safe. When treating sensitive reef systems or aquariums containing invertebrates, a separate hospital aquarium is the preferred approach.
